I’m fascinated by the stringent power of water, shrouded by the deceptive glassy reflective surface, and that comfort/fear dynamic that can be irresistible. I explore the meanings and representations of the female figure floating listlessly in the lethal depths of murky green. I want to accent that fragile connection between water and life – water and death.
I don’t want the reflective surface to fragment her beyond recognition. Though the surface reflections and abstracted shapes of movement and light play an important roll in these paintings, they only serve as an ethereal environment for the portrait of the woman. Her slight vulnerable figure is made powerful by the large scale and position of her form.
