Artwork > Self Portraits

In this self portrait I’ve chosen to paint myself staring directly at the viewer. I’m interested in our shared longing to understand each other. I like the idea of portraying myself in dark glasses with mouth open as if attempting to speak to the viewer. I’m intrigued by the formal and the psychological implications created by the glasses, a simple thing, but subject to varied interpretations.
The eyes, said to be the windows to the soul, are reduced, on one side, to a dark oval shape emphasizing the two-dimensional surface and on the other to some veiled suggestion of an eye.
