I am inspired by the stories of the early pioneer women. In this painting I chose to depict one of the four women laundresses who marched alongside the Mormon Battalion in 1886. Melissa Burton Coray Kimbal made the journey with her enlisted husband, traveling much of the 2,000 miles on foot and pregnant. To ward off severe thirst she would turn a small pebble in her mouth. Her baby boy was later born in Monterey, but only lived a few days.
I experimented by incorporating the implied textures and imperfections present in daguerreotypes of the early 1800's, yet retaining some muted hazy colors not present in the early photos.
